Near Venlo, a good 40 minutes by car away, lies the Schlosspark Arcen (Kasteeltuinen Arcen). Across the extensive grounds surrounding an old moated castle, a whole series of themed gardens unfolds one after another – from the rosarium and the Asian garden to the water features. If you prefer things quieter, combine the visit with the nearby thermal baths. A destination made for garden lovers that combines well with a stroll in Dutch Venlo.

Baroque & calm

Kloster Kamp – terraced garden in Kamp-Lintfort

Around 20 minutes by car away, the former Cistercian monastery of Kamp sits above Kamp-Lintfort. Its artfully laid-out Baroque terraced garden is considered one of the finest on the Lower Rhine and has been restored to its original historical design. From the terraces you enjoy a wide view over the landscape; the monastery church, a museum and a café invite you to linger – an atmospheric, quiet trip.

Moated castle

Schloss Lembeck – romance in the Münsterland

A little further east, around 40 minutes by car away, lies the Baroque moated Schloss Lembeck near Dorsten. Surrounded by moats and a large castle park with old trees and rhododendrons, it is one of the most impressive moated castles in the region. A museum in the castle and walks in the park make the visit a lovely day trip – especially when everything is in flower in early summer.

Very close by, on the edge of the Naturpark Hohe Mark, the Renaissance moated Schloss Raesfeld is worth a visit with its deer park and the extensive Freiheit precinct – ideal for combining a castle visit with a walk out in nature (more on this under Water & nature).
